CBD Topicals: Creams, Lotions, & Balms
Kirsten Thornhill |
CBD topicals are designed for direct application to the skin, allowing for cannabinoids to slowly be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
CBD lotion is great for those who are wanting to target specific areas or regions of the body. We incorporate our phytocannabinoid-rich (PCR) formula into each of our selected CBD topical products, setting us apart from our competitors.
Taking the time to ensure our CBD creams are consistent and of the highest quality, allows our customers to take full advantage of the cannabidiol benefits.
In today's tidbit, we'll be addressing all things topical, the how to's, the need-to-knows, and the beaming beneficial potential of CBD topicals.
WHAT ARE CBD TOPICALS?
CBD topicals, including salves, lotions, creams, and balms, are skin-friendly products that are infused with cannabidiol (CBD).
CBD is a compound produced and derived from the cannabis plant. It is a non-psychoactive component, meaning, it won't get users “high”. CBD is unique in that it does not bind directly to cannabinoid receptors, thus, you don’t feel “euphoric” or "stoned".
HOW ARE CBD TOPICALS DIFFERENT FROM LOTIONS, CREAMS, AND OINTMENTS?
CBD topicals are different from lotions, creams, and ointments in the regard that they should be applied to a specific area of the skin.
CBD topicals are more likely to be used to help the surface layer of skin, hence, topical.
A CBD cream, lotion, or ointment may exert its effects throughout the body by penetrating deeper parts of the skin.
The application of CBD topicals may be different than a CBD cream, lotion, or ointment. For instance, a CBD topical may be applied similarly to how you apply deodorant, with a swipe or two over the specified area.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A QUALITY ONE? WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Choosing a quality CBD topical right for you requires asking these important questions:
- Do the topicals products contain high-quality cannabis?
- Does the company provide certificates of analysis?
- Does the company do third-party testing?
Not all CBD topicals are created equal. It’s important to know if the company uses high-quality cannabis if they can provide certificates of analysis for each batch of CBD topical produced, as well as if they do third-party testing.
Here, at Nanocraft, we take pride in each and every CBD product, with in-house and third-party lab testing completed every time.
CAN CBD OIL BE APPLIED TOPICALLY?
CBD oil can be applied topically! Most CBD tincture oils come with a measurement dropper to help you gauge the amount of CBD you collect from the bottle.
For instance, you can apply CBD Oil Drops to areas of sore muscles by squeezing the desired amount of CBD oil in the dropper, onto the applied area, rubbing it in thoroughly, waiting for the cannabidiol to be absorbed through the skin.
WILL CBD TOPICALS SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST?
It is possible that CBD topicals may show up on a drug test.
Most drug screening tests are testing for levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant, giving you a “high” feeling. However, drug screening tests may differ - some may test for a wider range of substances with any substance level present and others may only test for a select few substances.
If your CBD topical is hemp-derived and contains 0.3% THC or less, you may be in the clear. However, take this with a grain of salt. It might be better to be safe than sorry here.
If you are aware of a potential drug screening coming up for your employer or event, proceed with caution. The research behind CBD drug screening is still sparse.
ARE CBD TOPICALS LEGAL?
CBD topicals are legal, federally, if they contain less than 0.3% THC. CBD topicals are considered federally illegal if they are derived from the marijuana plant and contain greater than 0.3% THC.
Federally, marijuana is still illegal. However, certain states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, such as California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Illinois, and many others.
As of 2020, 50 states have legalized hemp-derived CBD for medical and recreational use. That means 100% of the US can purchase and utilize hemp-derived CBD topicals and CBD products.
CAN YOU TRAVEL WITH CBD CREAM?
As of 2019, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) clarified that products containing CBD are allowed in both checked bags and carry-on when traveling.
Per the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD containing 0.3% THC or less is federally legal, thus, if users’ CBD meets this requirement, it is permissible for travel.
CBD cream may be permissible by state specifics, meaning that the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether or not an item is allowed through the checkpoint.
So for the most part, you’re clear for take-off! Our Nanocraft CBD Products are 100% hemp-derived, containing 0.0% - 0.03% THC.
HOW DO I USE CBD TOPICALS?
You can apply CBD topicals directly to the source or specific area.
A ‘topical’ can be anything you apply directly to the skin rather than ingesting in different forms. In most cases, users can apply CBD topicals, creams, salves, and lotions to their elbows, wrists, knees, or other areas of concern on the skin. For instance, our CBD topicals can be applied as easily as putting on your daily deodorant. It comes in a deodorant-like delivery system that allows for easy usage without the mess of other methods. A few quick swipes to the affected area and you’ll be reaping the benefits in no time!
CBD topical effects may last up to 6 hours, but it varies depending on the user and their metabolism. For example, it may take numerous days for the CBD topical to get out of your system, thus, you may feel the effects for longer than 6 hours.
How often you apply CBD topicals is totally up to you! Some users apply once a day, some users may apply CBD lotion numerous times a day. Start low and slow when it comes to incorporating CBD creams into your daily routine.
Keep in mind, some CBD topicals are more potent than others, containing anywhere from 250 - 1500 mg of hemp-derived CBD. So, ‘less is more’ may apply here.
CAN CBD TOPICALS BE USED FOR PAIN?
CBD topicals have great potential to be used for pain. Research is showing promise for CBD as a non-addictive, non-toxic, analgesic agent.

HOW MUCH CBD CREAM SHOULD I USE?
How much CBD cream you should use depends on you, your experience and the frequency of CBD usage, as well as your metabolism.
If you are new to CBD creams and CBD topicals, you may want to start ‘low and slow’. It’s possible that one swipe of CBD topical may do the trick, give yourself time to see if you feel the benefits over the next day or two. If not, you can always apply more next time!
We highly recommended consulting your physician prior to starting any CBD topicals, as they may recommend an appropriate dosage for you.
DO CBD TOPICALS REACT WITH OTHER LOTIONS/OILS?
CBD topicals may react with other lotions and oils. CBD oil may decrease or increase the effectiveness of how other lotions, oils, and or medications interact and metabolize within your system.
We highly recommend talking with your physician about starting a CBD topical regime, as other lotions, oils, and drug interactions may produce unwanted side effects.
