What's the Difference Between CBD Derived from Hemp and Cannabis? - NanoCraft

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the many cannabinoids that are naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. CBD is being heavily studied and is showing great promise as a nutritional and wellness supplement that can have a myriad of benefits on a person's general health.

Initial research points to CBD’s to provide therapeutic and medicinal benefits, causing a significant increase in interest in this cannabinoid and therefore a spike in CBD oil production.

In fact, CBD has been linked to:

  • Reduction in cancerous tumor growth
  • Minimization of seizures in children
  • Reduction in inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Therapeutic relief

This compound is found in the seeds, stalk and buds of cannabis plants, including both marijuana and hemp. It's easily extracted as cannabis oil from a cannabis plant. (Learn the differences between CBD and cannabis oil)

Cannabidiol has an effect on the endocannabinoid system of the body that regulates a number of bodily functions, including sleep, nervous system and immune system responses, and hormone production.

With increasing studies and research, CBD oil is being hailed as a natural breakthrough product that can positively impact many health aspects.

There are certainly benefits from using CBD, but what is the difference between hemp CBD versus cannabis CBD?

How Do Hemp CBD and Cannabis CBD Differ?

CBD and THC levels. One of the biggest differences between CBD that is derived from hemp versus from cannabis is the levels of CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. The levels of both THC and CBD are different in hemp versus cannabis.

THC is found in cannabis in much higher concentrations compared to the THC that is found in hemp. Cannabis has approximately 5% to 10% of THC, which is what recreational users seek for a psychoactive effect. On the other hand, hemp only has approximately 0.3% to 1.5% THC, which is nowhere near enough to get a person high.

Hemp is naturally low in THC but high in CBD, and vice versa for cannabis.

Health effects. THC evokes feelings of pleasure, pain alleviation and relaxation though some users may even get more anxious and even experience paranoia while under the influence of THC. By contrast, the higher concentrations of CBD in hemp are linked to opposite effects of THC.

In fact, hemp CBD is associated with several positive health effects, such as reducing nausea and inflammation. It has also been associated with the ability to fight cancerous tumors. Further, studies are suggesting that CBD from hemp may even have the ability to combat depression, diabetes and MS.

That said, marijuana-derived CBD possesses certain medicinal applications that can be very useful. In particular, CBD from cannabis has been linked to pain relief in patients with cancer and AIDS, and has been shown to alleviate the negative side effects of chemotherapy treatment. However, many of the positive health benefits of marijuana-derived CBD often come with the psychoactive feelings that don't come with hemp-derived CBD.

The side effects from THC is one of marijuana’s major drawbacks that make it impractical and even dangerous for some.

Legalization. Another difference between CBD from hemp versus cannabis has to do with its legalization. On a federal level in the United States, CBD is legal while THC is not. Legalization on a state-by-state basis is increasing for THC.

In order to be legally eligible to use medical marijuana, the state that it is being purchased or used in must have legalized it. In addition, a doctor must prescribe medical marijuana in order for it to be legally used in certain states.

On the other hand, CBD from hemp is legal and can be accessed from many sources.

Safety of CBD versus THC. Hemp CBD has been shown to be safe for use by all including children and women who are pregnant or nursing. It's even considered safe for those who are not able to take prescribed or over-the-counter medications.

CBD from hemp is non-toxic, has no psychoactive impact and does not have any side effects.

As such, hemp CBD is often used as an alternative medicinal product to alleviate various symptoms and medical issues.

On the other hand, CBD derived from marijuana is not usually recommended for certain individuals, including pregnant or nursing women and children because of its psychoactive effects, along with other possible negative side effects. It is also not recommended for use while driving or operating other types of motor vehicles and machinery.

CBD has extremely promising potential in the health and wellness field, prompting the explosion of its research and production.

That said, CBD from hemp and cannabis are not entirely the same, despite their similar chemical compositions. Important differences do exist between the two, most importantly their psychological effects, production methods, medical implications and legalization.

Based on the drawbacks of CBD from cannabis, hemp-derived CBD seems to be the superior of the two in the health and wellness realm.
